All of a sudden vs. All of the sudden - May 23, 2005
Posted: May 23, 2005

An informal show of hands this weekend indicated that I am guilty of idiomatic faux pas: "All of the Sudden".

I, of course, decided long ago to steer clear of this "all of a sudden" vs. "all of the sudden" problem by simply replacing the whole term with "suddenly". I think both of them are much too mouthy and you can't really argue that either of them are what one would call "good grammar" because they're both syntactic fragments.
