All of a sudden vs. All of the sudden - May 23, 2005
Last Updated: -0/5-/2005 - Link

An informal show of hands this weekend indicated that I am guilty of idiomatic faux pas: "All of the Sudden".

I, of course, decided long ago to steer clear of this "all of a sudden" vs. "all of the sudden" problem by simply replacing the whole term with "suddenly". I think both of them are much too mouthy and you can't really argue that either of them are what one would call "good grammar" because they're both syntactic fragments.

Citizens of Alexandria... The Old Town Theater needs you - April 26, 2005
Last Updated: -0/4-/2005 - Link

Seems like there is some legislation for a tax hike on movie tickets in the City of Alexandria that the Old Town Theater is concerned about. If you live in the City of Alexandria, maybe you can have a look at the letter from Roger Fons of the Old Town Theater and decide how you want to act.

This is the letter that Roger from the theater sent:

Greetings,

This evening at the Alexandria City Council meeting, Item 27 will be formally placed on the city docket. Item 27 concerns a 50 cent tax increase on the sale of movie tickets and tickets sold for live entertainment. Needless to say this will adversely impact the Old Town Theater to the extent of potentially having to close our doors or selling the property and forcing the demise of the property for entertainment uses. Don't let this happen - stand with us and fight this tax. The proposed tax increase would cause ticket prices to rise above the level of our local competition, thus decreasing patronage, ultimately affecting the Theater's bottom line profits. Therefore, with the costs of doing business on the rise the Theater cannot survive in this market. Currently, live and projected entertainment helps attract 1,000 to 2,500 patrons per week to other local area businesses. Sadly, the thrust of the reclamation of the vital King Street Retail Strategy would have to do so without the presence of the Old Town Theater and the property would have to seek an occupancy that would better suit the use of the building. Losing that many visitors as well as servicing the local communities would not be beneficial to the City of Alexandria's future. I, therefore, am requesting the City of Alexandria, to reconsider their position on the taxing of projected and live entertainment. I am also asking you to lend your voice to this cause. Let your voice be heard and send the mayor and the city council members your thoughts. Please find the link below. Group Email to: Mayor, Vice Mayor and Council

Thank you for your support,

Roger D. Fons

Americans pay off credit card debt (no shit) - April 26, 2005
Last Updated: -0/4-/2005 - Link

Came across an article on Slate that notes a recent upswing of payments on credit card debt - the artible suggests this is because of increasing interest rates but I hope it's also due in part to the recent bankruptcy legislation. I'd like to think that this is America telling the credit card lobby where it can shove its lifetime of indentured servitude!
