The crisp wind greets my ears with fangs.
The crunch of possum leaves upon the ground.
My right boot skirts the rim of where you lay.
I hide behind my hand and sob, head down.
A day ago I had you in my life.
A night ago I held you lifeless, cold.
Today I'm cold and cant tell left from right
wet nosed nuzzles linger at my side
I give you one last look, my little one.
I owe to you this deed and I shall pay
despite it all, I swear I'll get it done
and rest you will, forever where you're laid.
I cover you one spade-full at a time
and bury with no such ease this heart of mine
